PAG-ASA Public Weather Forecast - Typhoon 'Quiel' (October 1, 2011)

At 11:00 p.m. today, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) forecasts that the Typhoon "QUIEL" has made landfall over Dinapigue, Isabela. Its center is located based on radar, satellite and surface data at 150 km West of Baguio City (16.4°N, 119.0°E) with the maximum winds of 150 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph. It is forecast to move West at 26 kph and expected to be 690 km West Northwest of Baguio City on the evening of October 2, 2011.

Synopsis:

At 4:00 p.m. today, the Eye of Typhoon "QUIEL" was located based on radar, satellite and surface data at 40 km West Northwest of Baguio City (16.5°N 120.3°E) with maximum sustained winds of 150 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 185 kph. It is forecast to move West at 26 kph. 

Forecast:

Northern and Central Luzon will experience stormy weather while Southern Tagalog region will have rains with gusty winds. The western sections of Southern Luzon and Visayas will experience monsoon rains. The rest of the country will be mostly cloudy with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Southwest will prevail over the rest of Luzon and Visayas and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, the winds will be light to moderate coming from the Southwest with slight to moderate seas.

Public Storm Warning Signals elsewhere are now lowered.

Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under Public Storm Warning Signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone.

Typhoon "Quiel" is expected to enhance the Southwest Monsoon and will bring scattered to widespread rains over Southern Luzon.

Estimated total rainfall over Magat Dam catchment during and after the passage of Typhoon Quiel is 200-400 mm.

Estimated total rainfall over San Roque Dam catchment areas is 100-150 mm over a period of 24 hrs up to 8 AM tomorrow.

Estimated total rainfall over Angat Dam catchment due to monsoon is from 80-100 mm starting this afternoon.

Estimated rainfall amount is from 15 - 25 mm per hour within the 500 km diameter of the Typhoon.

The public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 5 AM tomorrow.
