PAG-ASA Public Weather Forecast - Tropical Storm 'Sendong' (December 17, 2011)

Issued at 5:00 pm. today, December 17, 2011, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) forecasts that at 4:00 p.m. today, Tropical Storm "SENDONG" was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 220 km West of Dumaguete City (9.2°N,121.1°E) with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness up to 80 kph. It is forecast to move West at 24 kph.

Synopsis:

At 4:00 p.m. today, Tropical Storm "SENDONG" was estimated based on satellite and surface data at 220 km West of Dumaguete City (9.2°N,121.1°E) with maximum sustained winds of 65 kph near the center and gustiness up to 80 kph. It is forecast to move West at 24 kph.

Forecast:

Palawan will experience stormy weather while Southern Negros, Cuyo and Coron group of islands will experience rains with gusty winds and the coastal waters along these areas will be rough to very rough. Northern and Central Luzon will be mostly cloudy with scattered rainshowers. Mindanao and the rest of Southern Luzon and Visayas will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over the Eastern sections of Luzon and Visayas which may trigger flashfloods and landslides.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Northeast will prevail over Northern Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the Northeast and East with slight to moderate seas.

Public Storm Warning Signals elsewhere are now lowered.

Residents in low lying and mountainous areas under Public Storm Warning Signals are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides. Likewise, those living in coastal areas are alerted against big waves or storm surges generated by this tropical cyclone.

Estimated rainfall amount is from 10 - 20 mm per hour (heavy) within the 300 km diameter of the Tropical Storm.

Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea.

The public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 11 PM today and the hourly updates.
