After years of ducking the question, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said Wednesday, November 2, 2011 that he wants to fight Manny Pacquiao on May 5, 2012.
Boxers Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, considered to be the world’s best boxers in their weight class, haven’t been seeing “eye to eye” for some time now.
Both fighters have refused to sign an agreement to fight that could potentially have been the most lucrative boxing fight in the sport’s history at an estimated earnings of $25 million per fighter.
Today, Mayweather who use the carry the unofficial title of “world’s best pound for pound” fighter, a title now belonging to Pacquiao.
Lately, any chance of a fight happening between Mayweather and Pacquiao is probably slim to none as Pacquiao filed a lawsuit against Mayweather for defaming his name and his reputation by insinuating that Pacquiao may be taking drugs. But after the Saranggani Congressman’s camp made it public that Mayweather is not in the list of fighters lined up for the Pac-Man, news breaks out that Mayweather agrees to fight the pride of the Philippines on May 5, 2012.
Mayweather Jr. made it public through his adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, that he wants to give the fans the biggest fights that are out there.
Mayweather will be 35 by the time of the fight while Pacquiao will be 33. They are running out of time. And patience among boxing fans is wearing thin.

And if his word is to be taken, the biggest fight is of course directed towards a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout, something that many fans and followers have been asking for in the past years.
So while many believe that the new announcement of Mayweather opens a whole new door of opportunity, don’t get your hopes up just yet. The same scenario has happened before so there is a big change that it may end up like those again – a DEAD END.
For now, Pacquiao is focusing on his match as he set to face Juan Manuel Marquez on November 12, 2011 dubbed as “The Last Stand”. This will be the third meeting between the two boxers which may eventually settle the score on who is the better boxer between the two.
Could boxing’s superbout finally be on the horizon? Is this for real or just another ploy to make sure that Mayweather is not eased out of the picture?
We'll see...
