4.9 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Eastern Samar

A 4.9-magnitude earthquake jolts several parts of eastern Visayas Saturday afternoon, Febryary 24, 2012 the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said.


The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was tectonic in origin and was recorded at 3:01 p.m.

In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter was traced to 40 km northeast of San Julian in Eastern Samar.

Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity III in Oras, Eastern Samar.

It also said no damage or aftershock was expected from the quake.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 5.0. It said the epicenter was traced to:

- 65 km north of Guiuan, Samar
- 82 km east-northeast of Tacloban, Leyte
- 125 km east-southeast of Calbayog, Samar
- 605 km east-southeast of Manila.

No casualties or damages were reported as of this posting.
