On Wednesday, September 7, 2011, ABS-CBN News reported that ACT Teachers , has declared a chalk holiday on September 16, 2011 to condemn the limited allowance the government gives to schools for their teaching paraphernalia.
The event aims to underscore the demand for an increase in chalk allowance for teachers, the officers and members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers have initiated September 16 as NATIONAL CHALK HOLIDAY according to ACT Vice Chairperson Benjie Valbuena.
Teachers said they only receive P700 a year as chalk allowance, or a subsidy of P3.50 per day.
They are asking that this be raised to P2,000 a year or P9.85 per day. This would require an additional P1 billion in annual budget to cover some 500,000 public schools.
"We will teach our students that day but we will not use chalks to emphasize our demand," Valbuena said.
"It's about time that a component of our campaign called ACT NOW for Greater Education Budget must be included in the national budget," he added
"We have also scheduled troopings of teacher leaders from the different municipalities of the National Capital Region to the House of Representatives to lobby for this purpose during the remaining days of the budget deliberation", he further said.
Education Secretary Armin Luistro, on the other hand, said: “We will increase the chalk allowance if we are granted an increase in the budget.”
