Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao is featured on the cover of Newsweek Latin America edition this week.
The Newsweek cover depicts Pacquiao's image with a caption: "PACQUIAO The Godfather." The inside story was written by Lawrence Osborne.
The article traces Pacquiao's rise to the sport with his first major win against Lehlohonolo Ledwaba in 2001 to his shining moments with boxing legend Oscar de la Hoya in 2008.
"To call Manny Pacquiao a 'boxer' is one of those descriptions that don't quite fly," Osborne wrote, comparing it to calling Mahatma Gandhi a "Hindu lawyer."
"The pound-for-pound greatest fighter on earth has begun to move beyond his bloody sport in increasingly unpredictable ways," he added.
Osborne also talked about Pacquiao's political career and his efforts at improving the living conditions of his constituents.
In 2009, Time Magazine Asia edition has also featured Pacquiao on its cover. The magazine also highlighted the colorful career of Pacquiao and his meteoric rise to prominence.
In the Time edition, Pacquiao said "it is a great honor for me to be the face of my people and let everyone know we are a small but mighty country."
"I absolutely had no idea that when I started my career in boxing, to provide a better life for myself and my family, that I would now be where I am today and on the cover of TIME Magazine," Pacquiao added.
In less than two weeks Pacquiao will face Mexican counter-puncher Juan Manuel Marquez in a trilogy at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.
In 2004 Pacquiao and Marquez fought to a draw and in 2008 they did a rematch with Pacquiao winning by split decision. In both fights Marquez claimed he was the clear winner but said he was cheated on the scoreboard.
On their third encounter, Pacquiao is favored to win with odds going as high as 7-1.
